The Newnan Junior Service League (NJSL) will host its seventh annual ShamRock Run on Saturday, March 2 and Benefit Concert on Saturday, March 23 to benefit Bridging the Gap (BTG) Community Outreach.

The race, which begins in downtown Newnan, includes a 10K, 5K and “Leprechaun Dash,” with the Leprechaun Dash beginning at 7:45 a.m. and the 10K and 5K races beginning at 8 a.m.

“Both the 10K and 5K race routes are certified and are among the last qualifying races before the Peachtree Road Race opens for registration,” said Kristi Mundt, ShamRock Run chair. “The 10K course is for competitive runners, while the 5K and Leprechaun Dash - which is two laps around the downtown Newnan courthouse, ideal for young children - are fun for the whole family. Dogs and strollers are welcome on the 5K course, so put on your most creative green athletic outfit, bring the whole family, and get a healthy start to your Saturday morning, all for an awesome cause.”

This year’s ShamRock Run will also incorporate radio-frequency identification (RFID) chip timing to ensure the most accurate finish times possible. Finish times will be posted on an onsite monitor with live results feed, and results will also be sent to participants via e-mail at the end of the race.

Race fees are $18 for running clubs and NJSL sustainers, $25 for regular registration (through race day), and $10 for children ages 12 and under. To register, please visit active.com until Feb. 28, mail a check payable to the NJSL, c/o Kristi Mundt at 65 Howard Hughes Road, Newnan, Ga. 30263, or pay on race day.

Results will be posted on active.com . These times may be printed and used on the Peachtree Road Race application. Visit atlantatrackclub.com for details.

Race packets will not be mailed. Numbers may be picked up on Friday, March 1 at the NJSL office, located at 6 East Washington Street in downtown Newnan, from 3 until 7 p.m. or on race day at the registration table.

Awards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each of the 15 age groups, and a prize will be awarded for the most creative green costume.

For more information on the race, contact Kristi Mundt at 404-272-0517 or kristi_mundt@yahoo.com .

The benefit concert, featuring the M-80s, will be held at the Alamo in downtown Newnan at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 23. The band, which is based out of Birmingham, is an authentic ‘80s band, featuring songs from Michael Jackson, Journey, Bon Jovi and Poison.

The concert will also include a silent auction featuring items, including a salon gift set, weekend hotel stay, an Arnold Palmer autographed Masters flag, gift cards and various passes to attractions.

Tickets to the benefit concert are available for purchase on the NJSL webpage ( njslonline.org ) or from any NJSL member for $50 each.

“Attending our benefit concert is a great way to have fun while supporting your community,” said Ami Elder, concert chair. “We’re very excited to have the M-80s play this year, and we know it’s going to be an awesome evening filled with great music and lots of fun. We hope that our community will come out – ‘80s attire encouraged - and support the League and Bridging the Gap, while having a great time at our event.”

All proceeds from this year’s events will support Bridging the Gap (BTG) Community Outreach, which helps connect potential community donors to those living below the poverty line in Coweta County. Specifically, funds raised will assist BTG in purchasing a van, which will enable the organization to pull a refrigerated trailer, to safely transport the 600 to 13,000 pounds of food it receives each day from its network of local suppliers. The FDA requires food to be refrigerated during transport, and this van will allow BTG to receive and distribute greater quantities of fresh produce and dairy products and abide by FDA regulations. Having the van will help BTG meet one of its important goals of not only simply feeding its recipients, but also providing them with fresh and nutritious foods.
