Norma Haynes does an excellent job telling your readers about downtown Newnan years ago.
She wrote a recent column about Jefferson Street as it looked a long time ago. She wrote about how it crossed the railroad bridge as you took Jefferson out of town and it became a dirt, two-lane road.
Once it crossed the railroad bridge it turned left, just as it does now. The route of Jefferson then was much like it is now. It passed Sprayberry Road (which was called Forksville) and continued until it came out as it does today on Bullsboro Drive near Publix.
Jefferson crossed Bullsboro and ran around through what is the strip mall today, in front of Target and came out through the property that is now Southtowne motors and crossed Bullsboro again at what is now Amlajack (named after Mr. Frank Cook’s daughters).
At this point Jefferson Street entered the peach orchard. As Norma said, the peach shed is still there on the left side, converted into an office building.
Jefferson Street continued through the countryside and came back out right before what is today White Oak Drive, and it became Highway 34. Construction of Interstate 85 cut off Jefferson Street, and its route ends in the industrial complex on the west side of I-85.
Keep up the good work, Norma, you are doing a good job describing Newnan years ago.
