The bridge over the railroad on Main Street in Arnco has been closed because of its condition.

Coweta County officials were notified on Feb. 4 that the bridge needed to be closed immediately. The bridge was closed as of noon on Tuesday.

The closure is a result of a recent inspection by the Georgia Department of Transportation.

According to the letter sent to the county by Andy Doyle, state bridge maintenance engineer, "this structure is in critical condition and requires immediate closing."

The bridge is "no longer safe for live vehicular loading," Doyle said.

The Arnco bridge, which is over the Norfolk Southern Railroad, is a wooden bridge. The inspection discovered rot and decay in the deck and the substructure.

The bridge belongs to the railroad, said Patricia Palmer, Coweta County spokeswoman. So it will be up to Norfolk Southern whether to repair or replace the bridge, or leave it closed.

"We will have to consult with them to determine what course of action they would like to take," Palmer said.

The closest detour to Arnco Main Street is Bibb Drive. Other detours across the railroad are Glover Road and Henry Bryant Road.
