From Staff Reports
Two weeks after handing Region 4B-AAAAA foe Creekside a pair of close basketball loses at home, Northgate lineups were dealt a dose of the same medicine on Friday in Fairburn.
Wendall Watson’s 3-pointer before the buzzer left the Vikings a point shy in a 55-54 loss to the Seminoles while Creekside senior Anna Watkins took control of a 33-29 victory in the second half against Northgate’s girls while finishing with a game-high 17 points.
Watkins, who had 21 points in a 46-40 loss to the Lady Vikings at Johnny Brown Gym on Jan. 8, did most of her damage before halftime before Northgate’s zone defense held Creekside to just four points in the third quarter.
On Friday, however, Watkins helped erase a five-point Lady Viking lead in the final period with most of Creekside’s points coming off rebounds on the offensive glass.
Ebonee Echols led Northgate’s girls with 13 points and Katie Mitchell added 10, but it wasn’t enough for the Lady Vikings to avoid falling into a tie for fourth-place in the subregion at 2-10 and 5-14 overall.
Northgate hosts Whitewater on Tuesday before traveling to Starr’s Mill on Friday with only three subregion games remaining in the regular season.
The Vikings, meanwhile, received 15 points from guard Luke Motzel and another 13 from Watson while falling to 3-9 in the subregion and 5-13 overall. Northgate’s boys travel to Lovett today for a non-region game.
• LANGSTON HUGHES GIRLS 56, EAST COWETA 42
Lady Panther standout Kennya Simms had 19 points and five steals as the Lady Panthers (15-2, 6-0) remained unbeaten in Region 3-AAAAAA.
East Coweta’s girls fell to 3-14, 2-4.
