In two recent letters, the writers blamed unions for all the problems in America.
Many companies who have never been unionized have outsourced jobs to third-world countries. Workers there are exploited for no other reason than corporate greed. It has only been a few months since a fire in a Bangladesh factory, which produced goods for American companies, killed more than 200 people because management locked the fire exits. The alleged action of some union members pales in comparison to this.
I really don’t understand why one writer has such a hatred of unions. He spent most of his career in the military and draws a government pension. He now works for a non-union airline and enjoys pay and benefits based on those of unionized airlines. I can’t see where any union has ever done him any harm, and he has evidently never experienced any abuse from management. He is exercising his right to work for a non-union company and should respect the right of others who wish to work for unionized companies.
The other writer chose to spend 27 years in management for GM. If he was not a union member, it was none of his business how the union spent the dues it collected. If he did not like having to work with a union, he had every right to seek employment elsewhere.
Workers have the right to organize, and anyone has the right to choose whether or not he wants to work for a unionized company. If labor unions are ever outlawed, who will management blame its failures on?
