Special recognition for a town treasure

Editorial

Congratulations, Danny “Boomer” Bishop. You are a Newnan treasure, and we join the Coweta Sports Hall of Fame in proclaiming you as the county’s number one sports fan.

On Thursday, officials and members of the Coweta Sports Hall of Fame surprised Bishop when they presented him with a plaque honoring him as our community’s top sports fan. The Hall of Fame also announced it will honor Bishop at the Feb. 9 Hall of Fame induction program in which Ron Beaucham, William Parker and Bob Tillman will be inducted at the 11th annual induction banquet.

Thursday’s surprise program was special for Bishop, who said he was honored by the gesture. Bishop is noted for attending local and area sporting events. He is a tremendous Newnan High and Georgia Tech fan who also cheers for the Atlanta pro sports teams.

Bishop is a familiar sight in downtown Newnan, where he walks and greets people on the streets and in businesses and offices.

Everyone has a favorite Boomer Bishop story. Here’s one: Years ago when the Georgia Bulldogs were recruiting Newnan High’s Demiko Goodman, Bulldog Coach Mark Richt was in town seeing Goodman. About 30-40 people were invited into one of our downtown banks to greet Richt after his meeting with Goodman.

The small crowd waited. Richt was running late. Someone in the crowd said the coach probably ran into Boomer on the street.

As the vehicle carrying Richt approached the bank, who should walk around the corner — it was Boomer, who greeted Richt before anyone inside the bank.

Richt later said Boomer told him he was doing a good job at Georgia, but Boomer quickly added he was a Georgia Tech fan.

Congratulations, Boomer. This town loves you.
