John Byrom has been promoted to the new position of fire training officer for Newnan Fire Department, city officials announced.

In his new position, Byrom will be responsible for creating and maintaining a yearly training schedule that will meet all state and ISO training requirements. He also will be instructing and facilitating training for the department during the week, and will assist the fire department during emergency response as needed.

Byrom started with the Newnan Fire Department in 1994. He was promoted to pump engineer in 1996 and three years later to lieutenant, and he served as company officer for Fire Station 2 until 2011.

In January 2011, he reported for military active duty. He was at Eglin Air Force Base in Destin, Fla., for Explosive Ordnance Disposal School (EOD) where he graduated in September 2011. He then reported for a one-year active duty tour at Dobbins Air Force Base in Marietta, Ga., to complete his EOD training.

After returning to the Newnan Fire Department, Byrom took the newly created position as training officer.
