Georgia Gives Day on Thursday is a new statewide event in which people all over Georgia can go online and make donations to registered agencies. It marks an exciting day for anyone who understands the reality of running an annual fundraising campaign.
Annual gift fundraising traditionally looks like this. We get home from a busy day at work and go through the mail (most of which is junk mail because nobody writes personal letters anymore). There is a letter from an organization whose mission we support, yet we are distracted by the chatter of talk radio or cable news, fears of falling off the fiscal cliff, minute by minute tweets and news feeds, skyrocketing college prices, looming health care costs, and enough anxiety to sink a small ship. Since we already feel bombarded and since the letter is not high up in our email “in box,” it usually ends up in the trash. However, financial needs for non-profit groups in our community go on even amidst the clamor because these groups provide vital public services.
CLICK, our local adult literacy service organization, is just one of many Georgia agencies that recognizes the need to respond to traditional needs with non-traditional measures. We recognize that the Internet has changed the world, yet we also recognize that it requires our service agencies to adapt as well. Our recent strategic planning process led us to a mission that requires us to enable adults in our community to improve the quality of life through literacy because our changing world demands a society that can navigate its complexities – both online and in education.
