From STAFF REPORTS
Ellie Farrington has been named Newnan-Coweta Art Association’s Artist of the Month for December at Newnan City Hall.
Hailing from Maine, Farrington came to Newnan 25 years ago and is an active member of First Baptist Church of Newnan and the Newnan-Coweta Art Association. She serves as Coordinator of the Alzheimer’s Support Group for family members at Savannah Court Assisted Living and ministers weekly to those with the disease.
Farrington says her grandmother figures largely as a role model because she, too, had flower gardens and began painting in oils late in life. Another motivator was the art teacher she had in the one room elementary school she attended as a child. Her desire to learn to paint was not put into action until she came to Newnan and needed diversion from her work.
Tom Powers was teaching through the Newnan-Coweta Recreation Department and, in 1988, Farrington began taking lessons from him, continuing until he left the area. Her work has been displayed throughout the community and hangs in many local homes as well as around the country.
Farrington practices her skills regularly every Tuesday at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road. Sponsored by the Newnan-Coweta Art Association (NCAA), there is no charge and anyone wishing to participate is welcomed.
Farrington also serves as a teacher of an adult Sunday school class, a member of the Voice Of Experience choir, and a participant in the Prayer Ministry at First Baptist Church. She has served in many leadership roles in the NCAA, including president.
The NCAA meets the third Thursday of each month from September through May, with the exception of December at the Harriet Alexander Art Center on Hospital Road at 7 p.m.
