“People asked me — what made you want to do this?” Robert Stokely said of his trip to visit the place where his son, Sgt. Mike Stokely, died by the side of a road in Iraq.
“In the earliest moments of learning of Mike’s death, I felt extreme guilt that I wasn’t there to protect him,” Stokely said. Eventually, “I was able to convince myself that wasn’t something I could’ve done, nor was it something I would have been allowed to do, nor was it something I would have been capable of."
