Sondra R. Harkness will be the speaker for the Women’s Day program on Sunday at Mt. Vernon First Baptist Church.
The service will start at 11 a.m., and the theme for the program will be Women of Power, Passion, and Purpose. Crystal Seldon and Tenadrean Hunter are chairpersons for the annual observance.
Harkness, an ordained minister, was born and grew up in Montgomery, Ala., daughter of Janice Robinson Banks and the late Theodore Robinson. Harkness graduated from Tuskegee University with a bachelor of science degree in nursing and earned a master’s degree of nursing from the University of Alabama- Birmingham.
Harkness attended the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta. She was ordained an itinerant elder in the AME church in 2001. Currently, she serves as the assistant pastor of Dent Chapel AME Church in Newnan.
She is married to George S. Harkness Jr., who is also a minister. They have four children — Sherita, George III, Curtis and Richard.
In addition to her service at home and in the church, Sondra Harkness has provided beauty and skin care products as a Mary Kay consultant for the last 17 years. Prior to working fulltime as a homemaker, Harkness was a registered nurse at Baptist Hospital in Montgomery.
After completing her masters, she was a nursing instructor at Itawamba Junior College in Fulton, Miss. and Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.
During the previous 22 years, she has served in the community working with the middle, elementary and high schools, March of Dimes and with her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta. “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not to thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path,” Prov 3:5-6, is the scripture that frames her life.
