Main Street Newnan is celebrating the arrival of the holiday season with its annual Holiday Open House Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m. in downtown Newnan.

Numerous downtown merchants are participating in this year’s event and will be welcoming customers with refreshments and in-store specials. Retailers and restaurateurs alike are poised to help shoppers start the holiday season with a full complement of Yule cheer.

“The Holiday Open House event is a wonderful opportunity to gather the family and enjoy a beautiful afternoon in downtown Newnan,” said Main Street Manager JoAnn Gentry.

“I encourage you to stroll through historic downtown Newnan, enjoy the holiday decorations, browse through our unique shops, dine at one of our appetizing restaurants, and visit with all of your friends in downtown Newnan,” said Gentry.

Main Street Newnan this week released the 2012 Christmas Ornament just in time for this year’s Holiday Open House event.

The 2012 ornament features the “Horses of Newnan – A Horsey Affair 2012.” Spearheaded by the Newnan-Coweta Historical Society, in partnership with numerous local businesses, individuals and organizations, historic downtown Newnan welcomed a herd of 25 imaginatively painted horses during 2012.

As part of a public art campaign designed to support the creation of an interactive children’s museum, A Horsey Affair 2012 offered local residents as well as visitors an opportunity to enjoy the work of local and regional artists while simultaneously appreciating the historic environment of downtown Newnan.

“This effort has undoubtedly introduced an appreciation of local heritage to audiences of all ages,” Gentry said.

“Add to your collection or start a new one. Only 400 are being made available for this year’s holiday season,” Gentry said of the ornaments.

The 2012 ornament will be available in several downtown locations, including Scott’s Bookstore, Grannie Fannie’s Antiques, Gillyweed, R. DuBose Jewelers, Bank of the Ozarks, New Beginnings, Bell’s Handcrafts, and the Business Development/Main Street Office on First Avenue.

Previous years’ ornaments are also available at the Business Development/Main Street Office, Gentry added.

Ornaments are individually priced at $12.

Also, it was announced this week that the Design Committee of Main Street Newnan is holding a “Win the Window” fundraiser.

It will help fund Main Street’s Façade Grant, a matching grant to assist business and property owners in the downtown district with improvement of the exterior of their buildings.

“By making façade improvements, it enhances the overall aesthetic of our downtown area,” said Kelly Goolsby, chair of the Design Committee.

The committee has collected more than $4,000 worth of merchandise from downtown businesses that will be raffled off on Dec. 10. “We have furniture, gift certificates, beauty and health products and much more that have been graciously donated by the merchants for this fundraiser.”

Tickets are $5 each and locations to purchase tickets can be found at www.mainstreetnewnan.com , the Main Street website, or call the Main Street office on First Avenue at 770-253-8283 for more information.
