Newnan Chapter 483 Order of the Eastern Star, Prince Hall, is preparing for its 26th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and parade in Newnan in January, and is including an essay contest as part of the events.

Since this is the 50th anniversary for the “I Have a Dream” speech, the Newnan Chapter 483 OES is asking children in grade levels elementary third through fifth, middle school sixth through eighth, and high school ninth through 12th, in 300 words or less, to share what this speech means to them. The deadline for submissions is Dec. 10.

The group’s community Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Service will be held on Jan. 11 at Zion Hill Baptist Church, 87 Pinson St. in Newnan at 7 p.m.

The parade will be held starting at noon on Jan. 12. Float participants are asked to enter Armory Road via Sewell Road beside Drake Stadium at Newnan High School no later than 9:30 a.m. for judging. The judging for the floats will begin at 10 a.m.

Those needing more information may contact OES members Margaret Thompson, chairperson, 770-253-1559, or Cynthia Ross, co-chairperson, at 678-423-0469.
