A week after scoring 94 points, Heritage Christian let its defense do the talking against a CrossPointe team that ended its 2011 football season.

The Crusaders weren’t about to let it happen twice.

Setting the tone with an early safety, Heritage Christian scored 22 unanswered points to build a sizable lead while earning a trip to next Saturday’s Independent Christian Schools of Georgia and Alabama 8-man Championship game with a 38-14 semifinal victory in a game played at Arlington Christian School.

The Crusaders will play North Region rival Ballard of Auburn, Ala., in a championship game to be played Saturday afternoon at Young Americans School in Conyers.

“I’m just happy for the program. This is the first time we’ve advanced to the championship game in our history,” said Heritage School head coach Al Willliams, who has been a part of every Crusaders football staff, initially as an assistant and defensive coordinator. “The kids and the coaches have all done a great job.”

Current coordinator Paul Frantz’s new zone defense this season worked to near perfection in a game where Heritage Christian’s high-powered offense was kept to less eye-popping numbers. The Crusaders’ biggest gain was a 38-yard rush by junior running back J.D. Farlow, who was “held” to 192 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries a week after a 300-plus yard outburst during a 94-42 blowout over Life Christian of Albany in the quarterfinals.

Heritage Christian’s defensive front made up of Jeremiah Winkley, Tyler Smith, brothers Christian and Jesse Parkerson and Jerald Dewvall, swallowed a smaller CrossPointe lineup at the line of scrimmage.

“They were a bit smaller than we were, but they do a great job executing their offense,” Williams said of CrossPointe which picked up one of its biggest gains on a long reverse play.

Farlow added a 12-yard touchdown pass from younger brother Jared. Senior Austin Reeves added 98 yards rushing on 25 carries along with three touchdowns.

Reeves also added an interception in the victory.
