From Staff Reports
The Parents as Teachers program held a family literacy event at Jefferson Parkway Elementary recently for parents of children in the birth to 4-year-old program.
The event focused on creating a print-rich environment at home. Princess Walton, Parents as Teachers coordinator, and Lisa Copeland, Coweta County School System’s Title 1 monitor, conducted the print-awareness training.
Print awareness focuses on children’s ability to understand the nature and uses of print in their daily lives. Copeland explained to parents the importance of labeling household objects, creating reading and writing times, and repetitive reading and rhyming.
According to Copeland, print awareness is a precursor to early literacy and success in school for elementary and beyond.
