Upcoming cancer support meeting to focus on family of patients

The Cancer Support Group (CSG) meeting on Nov. 7 is scheduled for 10 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Newnan, located at 15 West Washington St. While programs presented during the year focus upon cancer and the needs of Coweta’s cancer patients, the community is invited to hear the program presenters and to participate with CSG efforts.

The meeting site is on the main church level in Room 129C. Street- or off-street parking is available.

The upcoming CSG program focus is upon the family and issues faced when a family member hears a diagnosis of cancer. Two outstanding presenters will be discussing the impact of cancer when the breadwinner or a child is affected and, through their experiences, planning for or finding resources to assist against stretching the family unit beyond survival. These outstanding individuals are: Lutricia Jones, guidance counselor from Poplar Road Elementary School, and Gregory Coleman, who works in the health insurance industry and gives much time to working with citizens whose needs go beyond the purchase of health insurance.

CSG goals are to assist new cancer patients and to encourage them through their healing while looking toward life after cancer. Patients are encouraged to think of survival and to gain strength and determination from other survivors. Since 1995 CSG has held its meetings through the hospitality of First Baptist Church where regular gatherings of cancer survivors, their families, friends and interested citizens come together.

November 7 will be the final CSG general meeting of 2012. Remaining special events include the annual holiday luncheon to be held on Dec. 5. All meetings are planned to include time for sharing, questions and conversation along with refreshments and fellowship.

The support group welcomes cancer survivors, their caregivers, family, friends, and anyone who would like to learn more about life after cancer while enjoying the caring and friendship of others. For more information, call Annie Joe at 770-252-0894 or Katie Jackson at 770-502-9097.
