After a blowout 65th birthday celebration last year, Danny “Boomer” Bishop got a surprise early tribute this year.

State Court Solicitor Robert Stokely, who will be leaving his current post to serve in the state legislature in January, was the host for last year’s event. He also put together plans for this year’s celebration – a cookout outside Christy’s Cafe on Perry Street.

The celebration was held Oct. 18. The cookout took place several weeks early because of scheduling issues.

Bishop, who lives near downtown Newnan, got a surprise ride in a limousine from his home to Christy’s. There, a number of friends gathered for food and time with Bishop and other friends.

Bishop has been referred to as “the town crier.” He generally travels on foot and is often a source of information about businesses opening and closing, the impending retirement of local professionals, and other information gathered and shared as he makes his peripatetic rounds through downtown.

While Bishop’s family calls him Danny, almost all his other friends know him as “Boomer.” The nickname was given to him by the late David Wood, a banker who also gave of his time as a coach. Bishop said the nickname was inspired by Boom Boom Geoffrion, once a coach with the Atlanta Thrashers hockey team.

Bishop is a sports fanatic and devoted Georgia Tech fan. Often, friends give him a ride to ballgames in Atlanta.
