Seventy years of marriage is an accomplishment that few couples ever reach, but Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Parks of Newnan passed the milestone in August.
Celebrating their 70th wedding anniversary on Aug. 21, 2012, Ralph and Elizabeth “Liz” Parks were married at ages 20 and 16, respectively.
Both living in Miami, Fla., they first met at a skating rink. Ralph was in the Navy and was set to go to Texas for additional training. That’s when they decided to marry. Mrs. Parks said she didn’t want him to go off and “find that yellow rose of Texas.”
Their black and white wedding photo shows palm trees in the background with the groom in naval uniform, and the smiling bride with a beautiful corsage.
Mr. and Mrs. Parks lived in many different states due to his naval service as a pilot. Both of their sons, Ralph Jr. “Zane” and David, were born while their father was deployed.
After his military service, Mr. Parks served both the Baptist and Methodist churches as a pastor.
The secret to their long marriage would probably be friendship. Mrs. Parks said a friend once remarked to her about the marriage, “Y’all like each other, don’t you?”
They also are a good balance for one another. Mr. Parks is more serious while Mrs. Parks loves to joke.
The couple celebrated their recent anniversary with a family dinner party at home, given by their son and daughter-in-law, David and Nancy Parks.
They have four grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren with whom they enjoy spending time.
