Newnan and Coweta County have a long history of being a caring and compassionate community -- always willing to answer the call to provide help for the needy. Such a call was sounded last week when the Bridging the Gap food distribution program said there was a desperate need for food for people who are hungry right here in our community.
On Tuesday, the Bridging the Gap parking lot on Andrews Street in Newnan (a couple of blocks behind the Newnan Police Department ) was full and the food shelves inside the warehouse were nearly empty.
Bridging the Gap was simply running out of food before all the people in cars in the parking lot could be given food.
The organization is calling on the public to help provide food items or cash donations to allow Bridging the Gap to purchase food.
If you can donate food, Bridging the Gap will be receiving donations on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. beginning this week. If you want to donate money, checks can be sent to Bridging the Gap, P.O. Box 223, Newnan, Ga., 30264.
Although we live in a relatively affluent community, there are many people hurting because of the still struggling economy.
There is always a need for food to help feed the hungry. This time of year, with the holiday season approaching, there appears to be an increased demand for food.
Bridging the Gap can use our support to help restock the pantry. If you can make a donation, please do. It will help our neighbors who are struggling to keep their families fed.
