The moment “Walking Dead” fans have been waiting for is almost here — the premiere of season 3 of the popular zombie series, filmed primarily in Coweta.
The season 3 premiere begins Sunday at 9 p.m. on cable network AMC. It replays at 10.
Fans can spend most of Sunday enjoying reruns of season 2, which begins at 12:38 a.m. with the first episode of the second half of the second season, “Nebraska,” followed by the rest of the second half of the season.
The season 2 opening episode starts at 6:51 a.m. Sunday, and the entire season continues throughout the day.
In the season 3 premiere episode, the group of survivors — minus Andrea, who was separated from the others as walkers overran the farm at the end of season 2 — discovers a potential safe haven, a prison.
At the end of the season 2 finale, as the group takes shelter at Coweta’s Elder’s Mill, the camera pans away to the prison, foreshadowing the group’s next stopping place.
The prison was built on the grounds of Raleigh Studios in Senoia.
Downtown Senoia will be featured prominently in future episodes of season 3, as it stands in for the walled city of Woodbury — another safe haven that may not be all that it appears.
Scenes from season 3 were also filmed in downtown Grantville and various other locations in Coweta County.
Locally, season 3 premiere parties are being held at the Grantville Event Center and at the Alamo in Newnan.
The Grantville event begins at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and there will be food, soft drinks, and door prizes. Grantville residents as well as others are invited.
