Cousins and a full house

Our first deluge of grandbabies happened just this past weekend.

Until Sunday we’d had only Asher until his little sis Bri was born, then the two of them would visit on occasion.

Daughter Aubern Michelle and her husband Ian made their first trip to Savannah with our newest family member, Phoebe Jo. Unsure of how well that trip might go for the new parents, we prayed and held our breath. I was hoping it would be a successful venture so they would be able to come as often as they wished.

Phoebe Josephina Mason arrived in style, happy as could be. I told her mommy it is because her parents are so attentive and alert to her needs. Phoebe spent her first day at the grandparent’s house smiling and giggling.

On Sunday she met her cousins and our house was delightfully full. Asher is old enough to color with crayons so he dug those out of the toy box in the corner of our living room. Briella began walking just last week and sprinted from one place to another, occasionally plopping down on the floor, landing on her padded diaper. As quickly as she landed she was up again, pulling books from shelves and discovering everything within reach.

Phoebe Jo watched the action from the lap of one or another.

It was decided we would go to the neighborhood pool and a couple of swim diapers were acquired from neighbors. Asher and Bri loved the water and Phoebe Jo took a deep breath when her toes touched the warmth of the pool.

Later in the evening we cooked burgers on the grill and shortly thereafter it was time for the two older cousins to go home. We were sad but exhausted from a big day. I’d forgotten what it was like to chase after a toddler and a nearly 3 year old.

Playing with Phoebe Jo on Monday morning, I realized she would benefit by one of those baby gyms so I put the request on Facebook. Within a couple of hours we were able to purchase one second hand with a couple of baby monitors to boot.

A trip to the consignment store produced a few sunhats and bibs. Aubern and Ian left on Tuesday, stopping by to see The Boy since he wasn’t able to come on Sunday.

Another play gym - this one with a bouncing seat - was loaded into the car. The Boy said Bri didn’t use it. Once home, Phoebe Jo couldn’t get enough of it.

These are normal days in the life of grandparents but they are groundbreaking for us. It’s our first time having these miniature cousins all together.

We made plans to get together in December so the little ones would have Christmas with one another. Phoebe Jo will be ten months old by then. I have a sneaking suspicion she will be walking. I’m going to need some running shoes.
