What will you be doing on Oct. 25?

Editorial

To maintain a good quality of life, volunteerism is vital in any community. It's not uncommon that almost any day you pick up The Times-Herald, you will read about volunteers and what they are doing in our community.

We say that not to toot the horn of the newspaper but to point out how involved and committed volunteers are in our community. We would guess that 90 percent of the citizens of this community -- or more -- are involved in some type of volunteer service during the year. Volunteerism is an ongoing thing. It goes on every day, 365 days a year.

Today -- as we do annually -- we call your attention to what has become the busiest day of volunteerism each fall. Once again this year, "USA Weekend Magazine," which is included in your Sunday Times-Herald each week, is sponsoring Make a Difference Day. This year, the national day of volunteerism will be Oct. 25.

The magazine and the more than 600 community newspapers that distribute USA Weekend are urging citizens to get involved in a local volunteer project on Oct. 25. You identify the project. Plan and organize what you can do. Then do it on Oct. 25.

Make a Difference Day volunteers are individuals, small groups or large groups that get together and tackle a project and try to improve conditions in a community or improve the surroundings of people in need.

Last year, more than three million volunteers throughout the U.S. reported they became involved on Make a Difference Day.

We don't tell you what to do. Pick a project of your choice. In previous years Coweta area volunteers have collected books, helped clean up roads and streams, painted houses, collected clothing and food items, repaired heating and air conditioning units, and tackled many other projects on Make a Difference Day.

We encourage our readers to get involved again this year. You can register your project in the "DAYtaBANK at the makeadifferenceday.com Web site.
