We have a big appetite for Super Bowl Sunday

Editorial

Today is Super Bowl Sunday. The game kicks off around 6:30 p.m., but for millions the entire day will revolve around Super Bowl activities. No other sporting event captures the attention of Americans as this professional football championship game.

We like numbers, and surfing the Internet we found some startling stats about what Americans will eat and drink on this Super Sunday.

It's estimated that 325.5 million gallons of beer will be consumed today. That's enough to fill 493 Olympic-size swimming pools.

Do you like chicken wings? They are one of the most popular Super Bowl party foods. The estimate is that 100 million pounds of chicken wings will be consumed today. To go along with the wings, it's estimated 28 million pounds of chips will be gobbled up. And 53.5 million pounds of avocados will be consumed with those chips.

When the eating is done, we found information that on average all Super Bowl watchers will consume 1,200 calories during the celebration and game.

And on Monday, there is expected to be a 20 percent increase in antacid sales.

Yes, the Super Bowl has come a long way from that first game in January 1967. Americans have indeed become wrapped up in the game day activities like no other event.

Continuing the numbers: Sixty-one million Americans will attend a Super Bowl party today, and more than 111 million will view the game on television. Finally, 40 percent of the viewers will not be football fans, and each of the 30-second TV ads will cost $3.5 million.

Enjoy the day.

Newnan to Super Indy

Great to see the tentacles of Newnan reach out from my ol' hometown to my home-away-from-home, Indianapolis. As a former teacher of many of the famous Newnanites of the fifties, I place alongside the present governor of Indiana, Mitch Daniels, and Mark Miles, Chair of the Host Committee for the Super Bowl, both former students of mine since arriving in Hoosierland, U S of A.
