Small town America has been lost in many places in our great nation. Fortunately, that's not the case here in Coweta County. From time to time we comment on events that tend to show off the best in small town America right here in this place we love and call home.
There are things like the Fourth of July celebrations throughout our county. The parades, the barbecue, the arts and crafts, plus the family entertainment and fireworks spectacle sponsored by the Newnan Rotary Club which packs the Newnan High football stadium and surrounding streets. That's a true small town America celebration.
There are other such local events throughout the year that illuminate the good about small town life. We sense that's one big reason our population has grown so much in the past two decades. People still yearn for small town experiences.
Some small town America illustrations can be very unique. One of those occasions is planned in Senoia on Jan. 1, 2010 the first day of a new decade. At 2 p.m. on that date, the entire population of the East Coweta town is invited to gather on Main Street for a huge group photo.
This will be the second group shot of Senoians. The first was taken on Jan. 1, 2000 -- the first day of the new century.
This is a feel good type event, and in today's times of economic turmoil and bad news we need every feel good event possible.
The organizers of the Senoia photo shoot who experienced the 2000 event said, "There was this sense of community, a sense of personal being that you could feel coming from the people that were there that day ... (There was) an overall feeling of gentleness and warmth that you only get from a small town or community."
Save the date Senoians. It's Jan. 1 at 2 p.m. on Main Street. When you get there, don't forget to smile and say "cheese."
