Saturday food collection drive can make a difference in feeding the hungry

Editorial

Saturday could be a make-or-break day for people who are hungry in our community.

The Coweta Community Food Pantry and other outlets that help provide food for hungry people have seen the demand for food soar as the economy has tanked in the past two or three years.

Derenda Rowe, who oversees the food pantry, says, "With the downturn in the economy, our number of people we feed has tripled in the last three years." That means the pantry needs a lot more food to meet the needs.

Our community has a very successful Can-A-Thon after Thanksgiving each year to help stock the food pantry. Local citizens have been most generous when called upon to help feed the hungry throughout the year.

Saturday is one of those days when all of us can help. Here's how.

U.S. Postal Service letter carriers are having their annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive Saturday. The carriers ask their postal patrons to simply leave non-perishable food donations in or beside their mailboxes Saturday morning. The carriers will pick up the donations, sort them and pass them along to the food pantry and other local organizations with programs to help feed the hungry, including Salvation Army, First Newnan Seventh Day Adventist Church, First Baptist of Grantville, Crossroads Church and Oak Lawn Baptist.

The letter carriers say we can place items in our mailboxes, wrap them in a bag and attach the bag to the mailbox or place the bag on the ground beside the mailbox. Be sure the items are sealed and unopened. It would be best if the items were put in plastic bags or cardboard containers.

This "Stamp Out Hunger" drive can provide a significant boost to help fill the pantry and help meet the other agencies' needs. We applaud the postal carriers for their commitment to this cause, and we encourage the many thousands of postal customers to make a donation on Saturday.

It can make a difference in our community.

I left a bag of canned goods by my mailbox...the mail was delivered; the food was left behind. I tried!

The notice was in the Newnan Herald. I also got a post card from the USPS. It didn't matter. I had a bag of food hanging from my mail box and the mail carrier didn't bother to pick it up. She put mail in my box, and promptly drove away. Too much trouble for her to grab the bag of food.

In the past, I have received some kind of notification in my mailbox regarding this. This year I didn't receive anything, so how am I suppose to know whether or not my mailman is collecting or not?
