Who will be the next governor of Georgia? In less than a year, we will know the answer. Georgia voters will go to the polls on Nov. 2, 2010, and pick a new governor to succeed Sonny Perdue, who, by law, can't run for a third term.
Before the General Election on Nov. 2, Georgians must elect party nominees in the primary elections in July 2010. As of now, both the Democratic and Republican parties have crowded fields of candidates announced for the governor's race. More could get into the fray between now and July.
Right now, the top candidates in the Republican Party are John Oxendine, Karen Handel, Nathan Deal, Eric Johnson and Austin Scott.
In the Democratic Party the top candidates are Roy Barnes, Thurbert Baker, Dubose Porter and David Poythress.
It's still a long time until the July primaries, and Georgia's political history is full of races in which the early front-runners have faltered by voting day.
Who are the front runners today?
Among the Democrats just about everyone is predicting Barnes, the former governor, will win the party's nomination. Many think Baker will run second in the Democratic Primary.
As for the Republican Primary, predictions vary. Oxendine leads in most polls today. If you ask enough people, you will get a lot of different answers as to who will win the Republican Primary.
Some political types say they could make a case that four of the GOP candidates could come out the winner in the primary -- Oxendine, Handel, Deal or Johnson.
While Oxendine is leading in the polls, many Republicans think Deal will make solid gains and could be the leader by the time the primary election begins. Some are asking questions about Handel's campaign. She was seen as potentially an early leader in the race. She's not getting a lot of support in the polls, and some Republicans are saying she is not running a good campaign so far. Johnson from Savannah is expected to run a good campaign, but name recognition in many parts of the state may be his problem.
The crystal ball right now in the Republican race sees either Oxendine or Deal getting into the general election against Democrat Barnes.
But remember, things have a habit of changing in Georgia statewide politics. It's really too early to pick winners.

First off majority of the people who go into the army could not pass the test to get into the Air Force. All I have to say the army must be hurting to have a liberal clueless soldier like you serving.

First you were in the air force... I am pretty sure you wouldn't know what an AK round sounds like. Secondly don't even contemplate thinking you are on the same level as someone who served in this war. Lastly do you remember the invasion of Iraq... I was there ;) Well as you watched that from Newnan, you may have caught a little story about a soldier who threw a grenade in a 101st airborne TOC. He was Arabic but not Muslim.... was that terrorism or fragging the chain of command? Well no one had a thing to say about it at the time because the Bush administration (rightly)admonished them to follow the war not a side show. Again wait until they have the final report out. Have some respect for the dead you terrible terrible human being.

I joined the af in 76 got out for 2 years in 80 went back in in 82 stayed in till 2000. I was in the 91 persian gulf war and the 99 bosnian war. Maybe if you watch something besides a liberal news station you would see the evidence they (army) already have againist this terrorist.

Apparently your 22 years in the air force were between wars, because I cannot imagine for two seconds that someone would start spouting conjecture about an incident before an AAR took place. The guy might have been a terrorist there may need to be some policy changes when it comes to people in the military but it is very very disrespectful of the dead to attempt to make political gains over their warm bodies. You are acting a lot more like a Glenn Beck listener than a Military man.

I will vote for anyone that requires people who take from the government have given to the government. No more free handouts to illegal immigrants.

Lets see the guy yells in arabic before he shoots then they find where he had tried to contact people connected to the taliban. YEs I am a veteran 22 years air force. I am bringing politics into the discussion about my fallen comrades because the the liberal media is trying to downplay it and so is Obama. Of course if it had been another abortion doctor shot then it would have been a terroist act. The facts are out there you want find it on cnn nbc msnbc abc or cbs.

Dash I am in the ARMY. We don't know if it was a terrorist act. Do not bring your politics into a discussion about my fallen comrades. Wait for the facts. Are you a veteran?

For all you folks that don't read your history, take another look at the Georgia flag that Barnes gave you. it is just the stars and bars of the old confederacy with the state seal added. it is worse than what you had. the old flag just had the Saint Andrews cross battle flag on it to honor the soldiers. now we have a copy of the Confederate government flag...oh well, ignorance is bliss.

First off the liberal media is stll lieing and they control 90 percent of the media. Are they going to call themselves. They want call the the killing at ft hood terrorist act but they will call the killing of a abortion doc a terrorism. Bush wasn't a great speaker but he was smart. Obama cant give a speech without a telepromter. At least his college records are open not sealed like Obamas. LEts try cbs nbc abc cnn. When history is written and after Obama trashes this country then people will see Bush was allot better then what they thought. The country was doing great till 06 when the democrats took control.

While Clinton played Osama made plans. Our economy began it's downward spiral with the attack on 9-11. Bush has been blamed for so much. Clinton sold us out to the Chinese now just about everything you buy at Wal Mart is made in China. How do expect to provide jobs? The commute to China is too expensive plus how are you going to apply for a job if you don't speak Chinese?

All politics are local. I would like you to point out on this forum where liberals have been nasty to anyone and I will assist you in calling them out. I think you are going to have a hard time saying that President Bush was a successful President. I think he is a good man and I think he had the best of intentions but he did make some pretty bad calls and Honestly he CAME ACROSS as a little lacking in the brains department. Other than MSNBC can you give me an example of when the media told a lie about Bush and werent held accountable for it?

The ones who supported Obama want big gov to take care of them because they can't or want take care of themselves. If anyone is judgmental or unloving its the liberals. Their liberal media ripped apart Bush and anyone else that doesn't have their viewpoint.
Posted by Dash RIprock at 1:42 PM
Roy Barnes!
Posted by Josh at 9:32 AM
Come on man. How does that make anyone weak minded because they support anyone you dont support. I wish conservatives would be less judgemental and more loving.
Posted by chippy at 9:24 AM
barnes, he is the one that changed our georgia flag and we want to elect him again? What part of history will he take from Georgia if he gets re-elected this time?
Posted by duuuuu at 8:47 AM
Yeah I hope Obama can do for Barnes what he did for the New Jersey Govenor.
Posted by Dash RIprock at 6:52 AM
As a strong minded 23 year old liberal, I'm voting for Roy Barnes. I thought he should have been re-elected the last time he ran. He was, and will be, a good govenor.
Posted by CC Stewart at 5:34 AM
Yes that would made all you weak minded liberals feel better. Obvious you cant think on your on. You have to have the gov make you feel better.
Posted by Joe Cool at 2:14 AM
Around Athens Ga the Democrats are all talking about DuBose Porter. I dont know about signing if off to Barnes just yet.

Jeff Chapman not mentioned was the run away winner in the GOP straw poll there. How does a candidate not mentioned in this editorial win an Atlanta area straw poll ?

I would know more about an AK-47 weapon then you could dream of. First off I was a first Sgt in a anti-terrorism squadron when I retired. So you say don't contemplate thinking I am on the same level as someone in this war seeing how I have served in two wars. So you are saying you are better then other veterans from other wars. I don't believe you are in the army. Veterans that I know including myself do not think they are better then other veterans. But after reading your last comments and the other ones I have come to the conclusion that you are clueless individual who would not have the guts and courage to fight for his country. Its obvious with your attitude you would not make it in the military believe you me I have kicked your type out of the military.
