Children learn much from their parents, but it works both ways. Parents learn much from their children. And they are valuable lessons for an entire lifetime.
A case in point is something that took place during the Christmas holidays.
To make it possible for his wife to go shopping, the husband came home early from work to look after the children. And as often happens, he is enjoying a nap on the sofa when his three little boys come in and wake him up.
"Daddy," the older one says, "we have prepared a play for you and want to present it."
He groaned a bit, sat up on the soda, rubbed the sleep from his eyes, and said, "OK."
With great excitement, they rush away to their room so they can get into costume, and come back in a few minutes wearing their bathrobes and begin to share something they first learned in Sunday school.
"We are the three wise men, and we have come from a long way with gifts for the Christ Child."
And then, as spokesman, the older, 8-year-old boy said: "We bring gifts: 'gold, circumstance and mud.'"
The words are not exactly accurate, but what he said was right.
Whatever we bring to Christ, with a sincere heart, no matter what the circumstance is, even if it is muddy, or dirty, the Lord will receive it and forgive us. For we worship a loving, forgiving Lord.
