A thankful anniversary

Thanksgiving is always super special for Ninja Man and me. Besides getting to see family and enjoy a huge meal together, we celebrate our wedding anniversary. This year numbered 35.

I've been talking to him about the anniversary since the spring. Since 35 years is kind of a huge landmark, we have considered every possible way to celebrate. Travel seemed to be the common denominator every time we discussed it.

And then November came.

It's funny how when you've been married 35 years, you can settle for a whole lot less and enjoy it a whole lot more.

In August we thought of how we might go off for a long weekend somewhere. We discussed it while taking road trips to see about his mom in a nursing home.

By September I'd already asked a friend if she might be able to house and puppy sit for us. I was eager to get away since the loss of my father on Labor Day.

In October we'd barely had a weekend at home due to having to travel even more for work and family.

In November it was the weekend before our anniversary when we finally got to truly plan something. Ninja Man suggested going a few hours south of our home in Savannah. I thought of how tired I was of traveling and thought maybe we could just stay in Savannah somewhere.

The decision was to just stay home, eat out together and just take it easy for the long Thanksgiving/anniversary weekend.

It was so nice to not travel, not pack up stuff and haul it from car to hotel, scatter it around a hotel room (which we tend to do) lose a sock or three, stuff it all back in a suitcase that is suddenly too small, put it back in the car, zoom home and go to work the next day, exhausted.

We were both just tired of being away from home so it was really nice that we went to our son's for dinner on Thanksgiving Day and spent the rest of the time doing little more than watching movies.

Funny, how 10 years ago on our 25th anniversary we thought we would spend the next "big" one in Europe or somewhere else super memorable. We didn't know how busy we would be and how we would just long to be home.

Thanksgiving is a time to be home with family, and this one truly defined who we are after 35 years of marriage: a quiet household of five. There are the two of us and our three little pups, all huddled up on the sofa enjoying a movie on the TV, being thankful for one another.

It was truly one of the best anniversaries ever.
