Rants and Raves

A look back at the highs and lows of the previous week:

RAVE: To the Newnan Centre and Goodwill. Each had major openings last year. After 14 years, the Newnan Centre is officially open and will provide a great venue for trade shows, weddings, receptions, training seminars and much more. The East Goodwill retail store also opened, and the much larger location will be able to help even more people. Congrats to both.

RANT: Yet another felon with outstanding warrants decides to try and outrun law enforcement. It rarely works, and didn’t this time as the suspect crashed after losing control of his vehicle. When will you learn?

RAVE: Melanie Perry is the new Moreland Elementary School principal. We wish you best and thank your predecessor, Beverly Yeager, who served in that capacity since 1988.

RAVE/RANT: Euro Auctions USA got a temporary certificate of occupancy for its upcoming opening auction for big equipment at a site off Interstate 85. But the company hasn’t formally requested permission to move forward. We’re glad you’re here, but follow the rules like everyone else.

RAVE: To Mainstreet Newnan and yet another successful downtown event. This time it was the fifth annual Summer Wined Up, with 23 businesses participating in the wine-tasting event.

RAVE: And congratulations to Anne Bell, a lifelong Coweta County resident, on her retirement from banking - a career she’s had since 1974. Most recently, she was president of the former Bank of Coweta and in her last position, regional community executive overseeing Coweta, Fayette, Henry, Rockdale and Newton county markets for Bank of North Georgia.

RANT: Two suspects hanging out in a local motel were busted with a slew of drugs and weapons. Thanks again to our local law enforcement, who worked with Clayton County officers to arrest the two. Criminals - we don’t want you here.

RAVE: Women from Coweta Community Church are heading off to India to help women there in danger of being trafficked or forced to live in slavery. All we can say is “wow” and God bless you and make your trip a success.

RANT: We are fortunate that serious crimes involving shootings are rare, but a clerk was shot at a store on East Broad recently.

RAVE: To everyone who participated in the Senoia Social, which helped raise funds for Camp Southern Ground.

DOUBLE RANT/TRIPLE RAVE: Four men were arrested in the skimming of financial card information stolen from those using an area gas station. Hundreds were impacted and had to cancel cards and get new ones.  Congrats to the New York police and our own sheriff’s office investigators for tracking these jerks down and bringing them to justice.

ANOTHER DOUBLE RAVE: To Kahlil Smith for going out of his way to pull a wedding ring out of a sewer drain. And to Marjorie Morrow, who had lost her ring and then went out and got Smith a new camera as a thank-you.
