Rants & Raves

A look back at last week’s highs and lows.

RANT: Part of owning a gun is being responsible with them. That includes knowing all the proper safety steps, and also plenty of shooting practice to become proficient. However, it’s best to practice said shooting at an approved range, or at least a safe area with a good backdrop. Such a place is not, for example, a parking lot off Bullsboro Drive. But two nimwits did just that and got arrested for it. Thankfully, no one was hurt. But seriously, guys, get a grip. And yes, prescriptions drugs - not their own - were involved. Who’d have guessed?

RAVE: To the various public safety officials - Grantville Police Department, Coweta County Fire Department, Coweta EMS and others - whose quick actions and attention kept a bad situation from getting worse. A 2-year-old fell through a second-story window but escaped with non life-threatening injuries.

RANT: It’s a given some of us like to see just what our vehicles can do. Visions of NASCAR and all that. And there are appropriate places to do that. Drag racing down Newnan Crossing Boulevard - at 80 mph plus - is not a designed racetrack. That’s not speeding, it’s approaching reckless.

RAVE: Belk just celebrated its 70th year here in Newnan. The company has been around for 125 years, and we appreciate their attention to our community.

RANT: Our favorite whipping boy community is now looking at hiring an assistant city manager. And did. And now may not. And yes, we’re talking about the metropolis also known as Grantville, population 1,000 give or take. An assistant city manager, seriously?

RAVE: To all those who placed flags on the graves of American servicemen and servicewomen over Memorial Day. Thank you for your dedication and willingness to honor our finest.

RAVE: To the five recent graduates of the Coweta County Adult Drug Court. You have passed a strenuous and demanding program. You have your second chance. Go and change the world.

RANT: Readers may disagree on the proper form of corporal punishment, or whether it should even be administered. But we think all would agree beating your 7-year-old son with a shoe until he’s bloody, a large hematoma appears and other marks about his face, is not right. It’s so not right it might be a good time to sentence the dad to a little taste of his own medicine.

RAVE: Newnan City Council has dropped its contingencies on converting the old Newnan Hospital into a new University of West Georgia campus. That means it’s pretty much a green light for the $15 million project that will be headed up by the city.

RANT: Yet another domestic violence case. This time the manly man kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, who also happened to be eight months pregnant. Seriously, guys, man up.

RANT/RAVE: No one is sure yet. But at least those stupid traffic cones blocking one of the right-turning lanes from Bullsboro Drive onto the Highway 34 Bypass are finally going away. But now we will be facing new traffic signals for the two lanes turning right. Drivers will have to wait for a green arrow to proceed. How this works ... we’ll see.
