Walk the walk

Tonight is an excellent time to take a walk.

We would suggest heading to the Coweta County Fairgrounds. Bring some money for a donation so you can light a luminaria. Do it and take a stand along with hundreds of others.

Tonight, our community will hold the Newnan-Coweta “Relay for Life,” an event that more than 4 million people in 20 countries join with one purpose — to kick cancer’s butt. It’s the largest fundraiser held for the American Cancer Society, and we encourage you to be a part of it.

One of the main events is the lighting of luminarias in remembrance of cancer survivors, those who have lost their battle to cancer, and those who just want to help contribute. We say “survivors” and “battle” because that is what it is — a war.

Every Cowetan knows some friend or family member who has lost the fight with this disease, one that shows no mercy and has no regard to income, race or status.  Its sole purpose is to maim and destroy. Let’s replenish our troops.

The luminaria display is two-fold: to remember those who have fallen, and to raise funds for research to fight this war.

Over the last four years, the first display raised $3,000. That has grown exponentially with more than $20,000 brought in last year for research. Let’s top that number this year, and we can with your help.

“It’s not just a fundraising achievement,” said Newnan’s Zan Riede, who is co-chairing the luminaria display. “It’s a wonderful sign of community support. It’s a really great event.”

That it is. Time and time again our community has answered the call for help. Only prayers and medical breakthroughs — funded through our donations — can destroy this monster.

So join your fellow community members this evening. Take a walk, light a luminaria. Help stare death in the face.
