Only blacks can fix the problem
I wish to compliment Taren Brown on his letter in the Friday (8/22) edition of the NTH.
I agree with him, because as an old, fat, ugly white man with bad knees, I can identify with his concerns about strange looks. No, I’m not complaining, nor am I putting myself in an equivalent position with Taren. He has unique obstacles to overcome and they cannot be denied.
Unfortunately, the problems Taren identifies cannot be solved by white, Asian or other races. They can only be solved by blacks who create the impressions that he fears. May we ask where these impressions originate? Even Jesse Jackson was quoted recently about his fear of someone approaching him at night from behind, only to feel relief when he sees it is a white person.
There really are no laws to change. Present laws cover every situation imaginable, and are transgressed by white and black alike, but, from statistics, not at the same ratio.
Also, the attitudes of whites and others will change when the black community denounces the attitudes of those who cause these fears. It will take the specific responsibility of individual blacks as well as family and community action to solve what really must be considered a “black” problem. You see, Taren, once black-on-black crime is “solved,” the look-askance attitude will begin to change; change not only for Jesse Jackson, but also for those white and black policemen and those white and black security guards. Sorry about the freaky vigilantes. Whites have as much control over them as the black community obviously has over looters.
You are about 14 years old, Taren. Ten years ago, before you started school, the eminent Doctor (Ed.D.) William Henry Cosby Jr. gave three speeches in three different venues, describing various problems in the black community. He made suggestions, but they were mostly ignored and demeaned. Those problems still exist today, worse than ever, and no politician can promise any cures. Only the black community can. It would be good to look up those speeches, Taren. They are on the Internet, generally filed under “Bill” Cosby. Look around you and begin to attack the fears where they originate.
Please continue your education, Taren. With your writing ability, you have such marvelous super heroes as Larry Elder, Walter Williams and Dr. Thomas Sowell to follow. To understand integrity, you may rely on such stalwarts as Dr. Ben Carson, Allen West and Herman Cain. Be brave! Press on!
