Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RANT: On the passing of a member of our law enforcement family: Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and colleagues of Lt. Donald Ayers with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office. Ayers passed away over the weekend after suffering from liver failure. Ayers was with the sheriff’s office for more than 27 years. He started out in the patrol until and ended up working in the court services department.

REALLY?!? So how long the “zombie wall” will be up in an upscale neighborhood in Senoia is now anyone’s guess. Representatives of “The Walking Dead” television series are petitioning to have the wall up until November 2016 and possibly into 2019. The 15-foot wall can withstand 115 mph winds, so we hope it’s sufficient to keep the walking dead out as well.

RAVE: Derrick Moore has been named the new executive director at Wesley Woods of Newnan. He fills the role of Dick Zechiel, who recently retired. We welcome Moore to the community.

REALLY?!? Grantville’s mayor, Jim Sells, announced he will not be seeking re-election to the post. To call any position on city council, including the mayor, a “hot seat” is an understatement. Sells has taken his fair share of hits from this page, but we believe he’s always had his city’s best interests at heart. We wish him well and will miss his banterings and such with other council members.

REALLY?!? We don’t need a federally-funded government study to let you in on a simple law of physics. A semi-truck stuck on a railroad track will never win against a train. Yet a Dollar General tractor-trailer recently tried that, with the expected results. Fortunately, no one was injured. And it’s not the first time we’ve had a semi-versus-train standoff at that same location in Grantville.

RAVE: Newnan City Council has given the go-ahead for a second entrance for the Newnan Centre meeting facility. The new roundabout on Lower Fayetteville Road will become the main one for the center, which currently shares a single entrance with the nearby Centre for Performing and Visual Arts.

REALLY?!? Okay, so you just can’t make this up. We’ll just copy the first paragraph from the original story in The Newnan Times-Herald. “A woman and her ex-boyfriend were both arrested Wednesday after the two teamed up and beat up the woman’s current boyfriend – who was also struck by a truck.” If you want more, just put in the names Jennifer Renee Waters and Paul Monroe Binion Jr. in our archive search on the website.

RANT: Unless someone brings time-stamped photographic proof, there is no evidence Bigfoot has moved down to our area. There’s something black, with a long tail. That’s all we know. But with everyone carrying smart phones equipped with cameras, someone’s got to get the photo to end this – please.

RAVE: This weekend is tax-free for all those school supplies. Which, as we all know, equates to about a mortgage payment. Take advantage while you can; the holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday to midnight Saturday. But seriously, can’t we just somehow go back to chalkboards and looseleaf notebook paper and one pencil?

RAVE: Coweta County’s Juvenile Court was awarded a more than $237,000 grant to expand its intensive counseling program to help juvenile offenders and their families. It’s a noble effort to work not only with youth, but their families as well to get kids back on the right track. None of this would be possible without Juvenile Court Judge Joe Wyant and his staff – thank you.

RAVE: The Senoia Optimist Club was honored by Special Olympics Georgia for its work with the Coweta Special Olympics. The club is the first recipient of the Outstanding Organization Award for 2014. Take a bow, folks.
