Justice served

Victims of crime often think the wheels of justice move slowly. A crime has been committed. Where’s the arrest?

It’s frustrating for victims, but also for law enforcement as well.

Such has been the case over the last several months that has plagued the Newnan Pines golf community and other neighborhoods north of Newnan. Residents have reported dozens of thefts, primarily involving stealing from unlocked cars or open garage doors.

Community meetings were held with the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office and the frustration continued to mount.

“We want to encourage homeowners to lock their doors, lock their vehicles, and remove any valuables out of plain view,” Sheriff Mike Yeager said back in March. “Take that crime of opportunity away from these individuals.

“We want this stopped,” he added. “We want an arrest just as much as anybody.”

Justice was recently served.

The sheriff’s office announced they have arrested a 17-year-old suspect. That suspect just turned 17 and authorities believe some of the crimes were committed since his birthday.

In addition, authorities said they have other suspects - all juveniles - and expect to arrest them by the end of the week. All will be charged with 43 counts of entering autos and seven counts of burglary.

The good news is suspects are being rounded up. What is saddening, however, is that the suspects are all teenagers. Questions abound: where were/are the parents?; was this, at least in the teenagers’ eyes, all just a big prank for fun?; and why would they do this and for so long?

Authorities, as they round up the suspects, will begin to try and answer some of those questions. The problem for the public is they are juveniles and thus protected with anonymity.

We salute the sheriff’s office for their dogged pursuit of these juveniles and hope they may consider charging them as adults if the evidence warrants it. This was not a one or two time incident, but multiple burglaries and thefts over several months.
