Our everyday heroes

The best definition of a hero is an ordinary individual who, when needed, does extraordinary things.

We’ve had examples of that in the last few days.

On Tuesday, a truck driver was injured after an accident involving another semi on Interstate 85. The driver’s truck caught on fire and Brent Lowery, owner of the Sharpsburg J.J. Wings & Things, helped pull the driver from his cab. A few moments later, the cab exploded in flames.

Earlier this month, Mike Burgess was credited with helping to save the lives of two people after their Porsche caught on fire after a vehicle accident. As with the other incident, moments after getting them out of the car, it exploded in flames.

Two ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Without regard to their own safety, they did what had to be done. That’s a hero.

Next week, we have a chance to honor other heroes – those involved in public safety. Firefighters, deputies, investigators, police officers, troopers, EMTs and many more.

The week of April 27 through May 2 is Public Safety Appreciation Week here in Coweta County. It’s a chance to recognize those men and women who work all hours to keep us safe.

Next Friday, May 2, the 16th annual Public Safety Lunch will be held to honor approximately 300 public safety individuals. Contributions are always needed and can be made to the Newnan Coweta Public Safety Foundation Fund. The address is P.O. Box 1113, Newnan, Ga., 30264.

Your donation is tax deductible and all proceeds go toward the luncheon. The remainder will be put into a fund to help any public safety employee or family member with financial or medical issues.

We hope you will contribute to this worthwhile event, honoring our everyday heroes.
