Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RANT: It was probably the worse case of multiple shootings in Coweta County’s history. Within a matter of five days, five people were shot in three separate incidents. The shooting on Lovelace Street wounded one man, but he is expected to recover. Hours later, two men were killed on Hill Street and the suspect was wounded in the leg. And early Saturday, another man was shot multiple times and remains in critical condition. The last shooting occurred at a party where people were apparently raising funds to help cover costs for the funerals of the two who were killed. What is going on?

RAVE: A suspect involved in the identity theft of more than 100 local residents was captured in Florida. He was extradited to the Coweta County Jail. He is believed to be part of a group of suspects who made dozens of fraudulent ATM withdrawals. Authorities say approximately $158,000 was stolen from 160 victims in Coweta.

RAVE: East Coweta High School senior Yehong Zhu recently was named a region STAR Student and will now contend for Georgia’s 2014 State STAR student award. The Student Teacher Achievement Program is held each year to recognize top high school students across the state and the teachers who were most influential in their educational studies.

RAVE: Kyle Shuman, a senior at The Heritage School, spearheaded a week-long community service project in honor of his mother, who has multiple sclerosis. The project included bake sales and a community walk to raise funds for MS.

RAVE: Another big groundbreaking for Coweta County. HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital held its formal groundbreaking last week. The 55,000-square-foot facility is set to open in December and will create about 120 new jobs. The complex is located near Piedmont Newnan Hospital.

REALLY?!? Coweta County’s unemployment stands at 6.5 percent, based on February figures. A year ago, the county’s unemployment rate was 8.1 percent. Our county maintains the lowest rate in the Three Rivers region, which includes Carroll, Heard, Troup, Meriwether, Spalding, Pike, Upson, Lamar and Butts counties.

RAVE: Mitchell McTier, who was severely injured in a skiing accident, arrived back in Georgia last week to recuperate. He’s currently at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Besides several broken bones, he also had a serious skull fracture. However, his parents say he is improving every day.

REALLY?!? The General Assembly passed an updated gun carry law, allowing school administrators and teachers to be armed at school. The Coweta County school system hasn’t decided yet what it will do. Schools here already have armed School Resource Officers.
