Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RANT: We think everyone can agree that last week’s ice storm was a royal pain. Snow is one thing, but ice can just stay in the freezer where it belongs.

RAVE: A major shout-out to all our public safety personnel who stayed out 24/7 helping out on accidents, sanding roads and pulling out stuck vehicles. As always, we are in your debt.

RAVE: And tied to the public safety folks, another shout-out to the Coweta County School System, which had the foresight to close schools prior to the storm arriving. Our Atlanta neighbors would do well to learn a thing or two from them.

REALLY?!? Three suspects drove into the AR Bunker and stole about 30 weapons estimated to be worth about $70,000. The suspects were in and out and later crashed what authorities believe was a stolen Honda. The suspects fled and are still on the loose.

RANT: If you’re going to enjoy your cannabis, it’s probably a smart idea to not keep calling 911 and then hanging up. Authorities were able to track down the two suspects, and ended up arresting them for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

RAVE: Big thanks to all those who participated in the 12th annual Run for Angels. You got in some exercise, but, more importantly, helped raise funds for Angel’s House Children’s Shelter.

REALLY?!? An early morning house fire destroyed an entire apartment building, resulting in 19 adults and 13 children being left homeless. Resident Chris Render saw the smoke and alerted his neighbors. That quick action ensured everyone got out safely.

RANT: As if the icy roads and bone-chilling temperatures weren’t enough, thousands lost electrical power in Sharpsburg, Turin and other parts of southeastern Coweta County. Crews were able to get power restored later in the day.

RAVE: On the last day, Piedmont Healthcare reached an insurance agreement with Aetna/Coventry for a new three-year contract. Nothing like waiting until the last day, but at least people with Aetna can use their insurance at all the Piedmont group facilities.

RAVE: One of the county’s crown jewels — the Centre for Performing and Visual Arts —celebrated its 10th anniversary. The number of incredible performances held there over years is beyond measure.

RANT: Don’t you hate it when a major piece of equipment malfunctions? We do, too, except for us it means everyone knows as well. Where the sports section was supposed to be in Saturday’s newspaper ended up with two blank pages after our plate maker broke. Don’t forget, we’re having a drawing/painting competition using those pages, so send in your creations along with your name and age to the newspaper.
