Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RAVE: Coweta County and the city of Newnan are joining up to file an appeal over the state’s denial of a Certificate of Need for a proposed behavioral hospital in Newnan. The state says there isn’t enough need. Let’s see, a study by Piedmont Newnan Hospital on community needs said such a complex was needed. And the American College of Emergency Physicians report just gave Georgia a D-, citing among other things the lack of psychiatric beds. News flash to state. Time to reconsider.

RANT: It’s a new year and a new Grantville City Council. One individual got thrown out during the council meeting by police and the dreaded “racism” card was finally played. 2014 could turn out to be another banner year for the embarrassing antics of the council. Although we would be hard-pressed to top last year.

RAVE: About 40 area residents joined up for a bicycle benefit ride to help out Senoia resident “Lonnie,” who’s had a string of bad luck lately. Way to help someone in need, folks.

REALLY?!? Getting out of your car after a traffic stop with a huge bulge between your legs is just going to raise a suspicion or two. Turns out that bulge was actually a pound of suspected cocaine, and Gene Earl Easterling, 42, got hit with cocaine trafficking charges. If you went out on a limb and guessed Mr. Easterling has been charged with trafficking before, you win the jackpot.

RANT: We have a couple new submissions for Woman of the Year. Tammy Fowler, 43, was arrested after being spotted driving the wrong way on a one-way street. Two kids, ages 1 and 13, were in the vehicle. If you guessed she failed her sobriety test, step up and claim your prize. And then there’s Gwendolyn Lavette Respess, 31, who also got stopped for a traffic violation. Inside were seven children, yes, seven, ranging in age from 2 to 12. None were wearing any type of restraint. And it turns out Respess only has a Florida driving permit, no license.

RANT: And now meet Joseph Allan Buchanan, 39, a serious contender for Son of the Year. Buchanan broke both wrists of his 79-year-old mother. And then had the politeness to yank the phone out of the wall so she couldn’t call for help.

RAVE: Gov. Nathan Deal said he’s taking a strong stand against Obamacare. He said it will cost Georgia $327 million in 2014, money we don’t have. When are we going to scrap this horrible law?

REALLY?!? Many people probably don’t know this, but Atlanta and the surrounding area is considered a major hub for human trafficking. Not three months ago, two men and a woman were charged in Coweta County for trafficking a 15-year-old-girl. There’s going to be a symposium on the issue Feb. 1 at Cornerstone United Methodist Church. Go and learn what you can and hopefully save a life.

RAVE: Let’s end on a high note. Kyle and David Waters, 11 and 7, respectively, would rather give than receive on their birthdays. For the fifth year in a row, the Waters boys have elected to donate food to a local organization rather than ask for toys. There is still hope for the upcoming generation. Gentlemen, we salute you.
