Rants, Raves & Really?!?

A look back at last week’s highs, lows and whatevers:

RANT: Driving drunk, trying to outrun sheriff’s deputies, having two pistols in your car — all the while your 5-year-old daughter is strapped in the back seat — makes Frank Gabriel Lopez, 36, a serious candidate for Father of the Year. The most embarrassing thing is the grandmother had to come and pick up the child while dad went off to jail. Proud moment there, sir.

RAVE: Grantville City Council agreed to temporarily fund meals for its senior citizens center. All of which wouldn’t be necessary if our wonderful senators and representatives hadn’t decided to play the “who will blink first” game. Way to step up to the plate, city council. See, we can be nice to Grantville’s elected officials — when they do something right.

REALLY!?! Suspected tuberculosis was discovered in a Smokey Road Middle School student. Twenty-seven other students were found to be exposed to TB. Tests are continuing.

RAVE: And a hats-off to Coweta County’s commissioners, who also agreed to fund senior center transportation if the federal government didn’t get its act together. Once again, we have local governments taking care of their citizens. The federal government could learn a thing or two.

RAVE: Another successful Big Expo, organized by the Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, can be chalked up. About 80 booths set up by area businesses, industries and organizations highlighted what all the county has to offer. As almost every participant said, “there was a lot of information … a lot of information.” Kudos to the Chamber for putting on another great expo.

RANT: And Father of the Year candidate No 2. Best way to show your manhood? Severely beat your wife and then take out more on your 10-year-old son. The son got away, ran across the street and called 911, since his dad had ripped the phone out of the wall. Oh, and the wife-beater had marijuana growing in the house. Yes, Randon D. Welch, 36, we mean you. Your own kid calls the cops on you. Live with that thought for a while.

REALLY!?!: Get upset with another driver. Check. Pull over and get into a verbal argument. Check. Both drivers get back in their vehicles. Check. One starts following the other. Check. Stop and shoot at each other. Check. Only happens on Los Angeles highways. Uncheck. Seriously? Gun fights in Coweta over tailgating?

RAVE: To the Coweta-Fayette Rotary Club, which will be hosting a human trafficking symposium in February. It’s unfortunate that Atlanta is known as a hub for child prostitution. But authorities recently made an arrest involving a 15-year-old girl here in Coweta. We need to educate citizens on the signs to look for, and that’s the goal of the symposium.
