Food fight mirrors reality

The recent food fight in a school cafeteria in McDonough was not merely a chance meeting of the minds to see if chicken nuggets and French fries could be used as projectiles. This so-called act of playfulness has successfully mirrored our current, meaner, harsher reality.
Nine students were arrested and expelled for the rest of the school year. Five students were charged as adults. Numerous legal filings by outraged parents will follow.
When the administration caught wind of this possible scenario, they issued consistent warnings that they had no choice but to back up. Did the punishment fit the crime? Probably not.
Can 60 or 70 students be dumb enough to throw food to begin with? Obviously so.
There are two issues which the news media has not fully embraced: Peer pressure makes a good kid do things he would not normally do, and safety must override all other concerns. If there is even the slightest risk that a student could be harmed or injured, the sound mind must always rule on the side of caution. Let’s just be grateful no guns were involved.
