Spring 2015 special time in community

Spring 2015 will be a special time in downtown Newnan and in our entire community — a 90-year-old landmark in downtown Newnan will begin a new life.
The historic former Newnan Hospital building on Jackson Street is expected to open in spring 2015 as the new University of West Georgia satellite center for Newnan and Coweta County. At that time the long-awaited vision of students and their families walking from the campus to eat, shop and spend time in the heart of downtown Newnan will become a reality.
As state Rep. Lynn Smith said, “We’re doing something important here.”
Smith and all the others in this community who have championed this project are correct.
This is an important educational advancement for this community. An expanded presence of the University of West Georgia in Newnan increases the opportunities for our local citizens to earn a valuable college degree right here at home.
Today, The Newnan Times-Herald’s front page has two stories updating our readers on the status of the project to convert the former hospital into a college campus. There’s much work to be done in the next two years before we celebrate this grand opening.
But this is another one of those community projects that has jelled and become a reality because all segments of our community and others at the state and regional levels have pulled together. Everyone has been on the same page in making this project happen. The two news stories name many of those involved in this grand success story.

Our community needs to say thanks to all involved. Let the excitement continue to grow.

Let’s look forward to the spring of 2015 with great excitement and anticipation.
