Ban doesn't address problem

Words fail to convey the disgust and heartbreak I feel in the wake of the Newtown massacre.
I am a gun owner and ardent supporter of the Second Amendment. The liberals have not cornered the market on outrage and activism spawned by recent events. I, too, would like to see meaningful progress made to curb and circumvent the outrageous behavior resulting in slaughters we have seen in Aurora, Colo., Newtown, Conn., and other places.
There is a vast difference in deterrence of the criminal mind versus combating the disease of mental illness. When discussing firearms control, don’t confuse the concept of the rational force-on-force evaluation made by criminals with the selfless, suicidal apathy exhibited by those willing to die for their sick, perverted motivations understood by no one.
The current line of thought of limiting access to firearms of dubious description, like the assault weapons moniker, and limiting firepower capability in magazine bans may give liberals the feel-good assuagement they are seeking, but it does nothing to address the real problem.
I get the feeling the current mood is to throw the Constitution under the bus in the interest of feeling like we are doing something meaningful to confront this crisis. Restricting the access of responsible citizens to firearms and magazine bans couldn’t be further from a productive solution to irrational behavior.

The criminal minds, however, possess at least a modicum of rational thought in that they prey on those they presume to be defenseless victims. Recent crime statistics indicate more guns equals less crime. Making firearms off limits by some descriptor like semi-auto assault weapons and limiting one’s capacity to feed a defensive weapons is inappropriate and counterproductive to my God-given right to self-defense.

Any elected official who votes for such bans will not get my support in the next election.
