Our schools, students lead way in supporting community projectsAfter the end of classes on Friday, students, teachers, administrators and staff in our Coweta County School System will begin their Christmas holiday break. We hope everyone involved in our schools has a safe and joyous holiday season.
On the eve of our schools’ holiday break, we want to applaud our students and everyone in our schools for the wonderful job they do throughout the year in supporting community causes. It is remarkable how our schools take the lead in helping make so many community projects successful.
This came to mind as we read the news story in the Wednesday edition of this newspaper about how our schools had supported the local Ferst Foundation coin drive to raise money to mail books monthly to children age 5 and under in Coweta County.
This year, our schools collected $14,424 for the Ferst drive, surpassing last year’s collections of $12,791. This year’s school collections will enable Ferst to mail 6,190 books into the homes of young children in our community. This Ferst program is so important because it allows more young children to be exposed to books and reading at an early age, which is an indicator they will be more successful when they enter the classroom.
Another community program in which our schools and students lead the way is the Newnan Junior League’s annual Can-A-Thon to collect food items for the Coweta Community Food Pantry. This year’s drive in November resulted in total collections of more than 273,000 food items. Our students and schools collected more than 182,000 of those food items.
We could go on with other worthwhile community projects in which our students and our schools lead the way and set an example for all of us to follow.
We applaud our students and our schools for all they do to make life better in our community.
Enjoy the holiday season and keep serving your community.
