New U.S. citizens remind us just how great citizenship is

It’s great to be an American citizen.
Too often we take our citizenship in the greatest nation in the world for granted. We spend too much time complaining about things – from politics to the weather and many other concerns in between. But American citizens should never lose sight of how blessed and fortunate we are to live in the “land of the free and the home of the brave.”
These thoughts came to mind as we read Alex McRae’s news story in the Saturday Newnan Times-Herald about 49 people from 23 countries were sworn in as U.S. citizens during the first-ever naturalization ceremony here in Newnan.
McRae wrote, “Once the ceremony was over, our newest citizens were already united in their happiness on becoming Americans.”
“I feel so great,” said one of the new U.S. citizens from Bangladesh. “I have dreamed about this for years. And now I am an American.”
Another from Nigeria said, “I have worked for this for so long. It has been a dream for me to be an American. And now I am.”
The joy and the thrill of these new U.S. citizens indeed was clearly evident when they were sworn in.
Most of us gained our U.S. citizenship at birth, and we should always be thankful for that fact. We are Americans, and we should be proud.
