Coweta voting turnout tops 75 percent

Tuesday’s 2012 General Election day has come and gone, and there were no real surprises in the Coweta County results.
Obviously, the most hotly-contested race on the ballot in Coweta and throughout the country was the race for president. This is Republican country and, as expected, Coweta voters gave Republican Mitt Romney a big chunk of their votes. Romney won 71.40 percent of the Coweta vote.
The next biggest race in the minds of many Coweta voters was the statewide Charter School Amendment. In Coweta, 65.85 percent of the voters supported the amendment. The amendment sets up a state commission to review charter school requests that are rejected by local school boards. We were not surprised Coweta voters endorsed the Charter School Amendment, but the margin was higher than many had expected.
One of the most encouraging numbers from Tuesday’s election in Coweta was voter turnout.
A total of 75.48 percent of Coweta’s registered voters went to the polls in this General Election. That meant 55,774 of the 73,888 registered voters cast ballots.
That’s a remarkably high voter turnout, and Coweta County election officials handled the huge turnout with no significant problems reported on election day or during the 17-day early voting period when more than 20,000 of the votes were cast.
