Cameras don't make sense on Bullsboro at the bypass; drivers need to slow down
Improving safety conditions on our roadways should always be a priority.We’re glad Newnan City Council asked Police Chief Buster Meadows to look into the possibility of installing traffic light cameras at the intersection of Bullsboro Drive and Newnan Crossing Bypass/Millard Farmer Industrial Boulevard. This intersection has some of the heaviest traffic in Newnan and is an intersection with too many accidents.
After studying traffic light cameras, Meadows made a report to council this week. The bottom line is the cameras and other significant monthly costs of the project were termed “mighty expensive.” Also, there’s no guarantee the cameras would reduce accidents. Meadows’ findings revealed installing such cameras often reduce side impact accidents but sometimes increase rear-end wrecks. Rear-end wrecks already account for many of the accidents at the intersection. Meadows said the accident total could even increase after the cameras were installed.
We say Newnan Council was wise not to act on the traffic cameras. With no guarantee that safety conditions would be improved, plus the cost of the project, why install the cameras?
One final thought: Should the speed limit on Bullsboro be reduced near this intersection?
