Want to be a 'friend' of our state park?

Thousands of residents of Coweta County and the surrounding areas are enjoying our community’s new 2,900-acre Chattahoochee Bend State Park along the Chattahoochee River on the county’s western border.
The park was opened last year, and it’s truly a gem for this community and for the Georgia Parks System.
You may have read the story and saw the photos in Thursday’s Newnan Times-Herald of the cleanup effort of a four-mile stretch of the river at the park.
Twenty volunteers removed more than 1,100 pounds of debris from the river on Saturday during the second river cleanup day in the park.
This volunteer effort is another example in the continuing push by the Friends of the Chattahoochee Bend State Park and others to ensure this new park is developed and maintained so all visitors can enjoy this beautiful area.
We’ve written before that the efforts of this volunteer “Friends” group is a driving force behind making this park a reality. The group has already built eight miles of hiking trails, with more already marked for construction.
There are opportunities for more of us to get involved with Friends and offer volunteer time at the park. You can help clean the river. You can help build the trails. There are many other activities that need volunteers.
There are benefits to becoming a Friend -- like free passes to Georgia parks. Why not consider joining the local Friends group and help develop our new state park. Information is available at www.bendfriend.com .
