Population growth remains sluggish

Population growth in Coweta County and the metro Atlanta area was dramatically slowed by the struggling economy of the past five years.
Growth remains significantly slower than what the 28-county Metro Atlanta region experienced before the economy went sour. People are not moving as much anywhere in our country because jobs are scarce and the national economy has been slow to improve.
That said, the 28-county region ranked third in overall growth in the nation between 2000-2010, according to Census Bureau data and a regional snapshot report from the Atlanta Regional Commission. Only Dallas and Houston add more population than metro Atlanta during the first decade of the new century.
According to the ARC report, the region’s growth rate ranked seventh in the nation from 2010 to 2011. Almost 73,000 new residents came to the 28 counties during that year.
While population has dramatically slowed, there’s no question that our region will continue to grow as the economy improves. However, growth may not reach the rapid pace of previous decades if transportation and other infrastructure issues hurt economic development and jobs creation in the area.
