Coweta Festivals excited about the future of Powers'

Since last fall it appeared a Labor Day weekend tradition in Coweta County -- the Powers’ Festival -- might not happen this year. The non-profit group Coweta Festivals Inc., which has owned the Powers’ property and operated the festival, announced the future of the festival was uncertain.
That uncertainty has changed. This week, Coweta Festivals Inc. said the festival would indeed take place during the Labor Day weekend, but there will be significant changes in who operates the event.
In the past, Coweta Festivals five organizations -- the Pilot Club, Jaycees, Newnan-Coweta Chamber of Commerce, Coweta 4-H and the Newnan-Coweta Art Association -- have used volunteers to run the festival. That’s changed. This year, Powers’ Festival will be run by Mark Turnham of Xcessive Sound, a company that is experienced in running this type of activity, said a Coweta Festivals spokesperson.
Coweta Festivals is excited about the new arrangement with Xcessive Sound. Said Beverly Garner, president of Coweta Festivals, “We have someone who is experienced in this sort of thing and he just has great plans.”
“The purpose is the same -- for Coweta Festivals to make money to put back into the community,” said Garner.
There may be other opportunities for Coweta Festivals and Powers’ to make money with events that will allow Coweta residents and others to visit the festival grounds on the western border of the county off Highway 34.
Coweta County has granted Coweta Festivals a special use permit under the county’s new special events ordinance. “We are excited about the months and years ahead, as we expand our operations to include more variety, more fun and more entertainment,” said Garner. “We plan to bring you the very best outdoor events in west Georgia.”
We hope that happens. There’s grand potential for the Powers’ property. It’s a beautiful, rural venue that could lend itself to a variety of special events. It’s great to see the Labor Day weekend festival continue in September, and we like the pledge of bringing “the very best outdoor events in west Georgia to the Powers’ property.
