Obituary
Mr. Everett "Preacher" Graves, 88, died Monday, October 26, 2009, at Southland Health & Rehabilitation in Peachtree City. He was born August 6, 1921, in Humboldt, TN, to the late William A. & Martha Walton Graves. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife of 59 years, Evelyn Sedberry Graves.
Mr. Graves grew up on the family farm in Humboldt, TN, where his love of flying began as he watched planes fly overhead. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Mr. Graves felt compelled to serve his country and volunteered for the Army Air Corps. He was trained to fly B-24 bombers and was assigned to the 460th bomb group, which was nicknamed the "Black Panthers." He flew numerous combat missions in Europe, where he received the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart. Mr. Graves was nominated for the Silver Star for flying his plane a few feet over another heavily damaged plane shielding it through enemy fire.
After his military service, Mr. Graves worked in the insurance business and had a successful career with Allianz Insurance and Fidelity Union Life before retiring and moving to Newnan in 1997.
The memorial service is Sunday, November 8, 2009, at 2 p.m. at Heatherwood Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Daughtery officiating. The family will greet friends in the church fellowship hall following the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heatherwood Baptist Church Building Fund, 721 Shenandoah Blvd, Newnan, GA 30265.

He is survived by his wife of six years, Lucy Dodd Graves of Newnan; daughter, Pam (Tom) Attenborough of Luthersville; son, Everett "Butch" (Shelley) Graves II of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, Jason (Ellen) Graves of Raleigh, Emily (Andy) Collins of Raleigh, Daniel Graves of New York City, Krista (Patrick) Horton of Villa Rica, John Weeks of Jonesboro; brother, Russell Graves of Chattanooga, TN; sisters, Martha Bodkin of Sandy Springs, Betty Jean Jones of Humboldt, TN; and 11 great-grandchildren.
